Ontario Auto Insurance Reforms
Starting July 1, 2026, the Ontario government is updating how Statutory Accident Benefits (SABs) work under auto insurance policies. These changes give you more flexibility to choose the coverage that fits your life, while keeping essential protections in place for everyone. Here is a clear overview of what is changing and what it means for you.
- What’s Staying the Same:
Standard medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits remain mandatory. Every Ontario driver continues to have this essential coverage, regardless of who is at fault in an accident.
- What’s Changing:
Many additional accident benefits are moving from mandatory to optional . You can choose to keep them, remove them, or add them based on your personal situation, existing workplace coverage, or budget.
Note: Your current policy will renew automatically with existing coverage and limits unless you choose to make changes in writing with your insurer. This summary is provided for informational purposes only. Please speak with a Sterling Brokers advisor for guidance specific to your policy.
