Your HR Action Plan for Mental Health Awareness Month: 4 Steps for Canadian Workplaces
Mental Health Awareness Month in Canada (May) is a chance for HR and leadership teams to move from intention to action. The four steps below give Canadian employers a simple, repeatable plan that supports workplace mental health all year, not just during the month of May.
1. Send a Mental Health Week Kickoff Message
A short, sincere note from your CEO or HR lead during the first week of May tells employees that mental health is supported here. Keep it under 200 words and include:
- Why your organization is recognizing Mental Health Month
- One specific resource, such as your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) phone number or portal link
- An invitation to talk with a manager or HR if support is needed
2. Audit Your EAP and Paramedical Coverage
If your group benefits plan has not been reviewed in the past 18 to 24 months, it likely no longer reflects employee needs. Review:
- Mental health practitioner maximums (psychologists, social workers, registered counsellors). The legacy $500 cap is no longer enough.
- EAP utilization data. Low usage often signals poor awareness, not low need.
- Virtual care access, including 24-hour support for shift workers and remote employees
3. Schedule a Manager Mental Health Training Session
Managers are the first line of support for most employees. A single 60 – 90 minute session helps them spot the signs of burnout and start safe conversations. Consider:
- Mental Health First Aid (Mental Health Commission of Canada), the recognized Canadian standard
- The Working Mind, also from the Mental Health Commission of Canada, designed for the workplace
- CMHA workplace training, available through local branches across Canada
4. Plan a Follow-Up Activity for Each Quarter (Example)
One month is not enough. Lock in a small action for each quarter so mental health stays on the calendar:
- Q2 (May to July): Mental Health Week kickoff and benefits refresher.
- Q3 (August to October): Burnout check-in and World Mental Health Day (October 10).
- Q4 (November to January): Holiday stress and Bell Let’s Talk Day support.
